The research essay will be composed of these sections:(1,000+ words plus a Works Cited page)
Introduction (introduces your topic, the thesis, gives background information, definitions, etc.)
Problem (defines the problem in detail, causes, and/or explains who is affected and how)
Solution (proposes a solution(s) and explains why it can be effective; or if there are no current/possible solutions, this section should discuss ways to decrease the problem or address what needs to happen to get to a solution.)
Conclusion (wraps up main points of the problem, reminds/restates the solution, etc.)
Works Cited Page (minimum 6 credible sources)
Your final essay will be 2,000+ words; You may briefly use personal experience and/or first person in these essays as long as it is supportive and relevant and not the sole focus of your essay. The final product is not personal narrative, rather argument backed by research. You will NOT use an LLM/Ai or Grammarly to write any portion of this essay! General Tips:
Be very specific! List your main points or reasons in your thesis statement. I may refer to this as a complex thesis statement or demonstrating the HOW, WHY, or BY WHAT MEANS within the thesis.
Review the ENG 1 essay grading rubric Download rubric in advance and while you revise your writing.
I tell everyone this — I really need to be able to see your problem. Can I get in my car and drive there? Can I fly there? Can I walk there? A tangible real problem is needed. Do NOT assume a problem exists when it may not.
The solution does not have to be a perfect fix. It might even be a small step that helps solve the problem, even if it does not 100% solve the problem.
You may also find something with a solution in place that did not work, has flaws, or need more improvement.
Your solution cannot challenge the consensus of the scientific community. We are in an academic environment, and so we will respect the consensus of our academic communities.
Pitfalls — you can’t solve global warming, world poverty, world starvation, or massive problems in 2,000 words. You can look at these issues locally in your community and I urge you to do that!
Your thesis is often the last 1 or 2 sentences of your introduction.
Include at least 1 quote from research in each paragraph. You can begin by using the articles I assigned you in week 2 and start doing your own research!
Come up with an interesting title “Essay 2,” “Final publish,” or using the title of one of the texts is not adequate. Create your own title.

THE PROMPT I wrote At the start of the 24-hour self-reflection assignment, if someone were to ask me if I consider myself an eco-friendly person, I would have answered right away with no hesitation: Yes. But after those 24 hours, I realized that I was not as eco-friendly as I thought. One big red flag that stood out to me was how many times throughout my day I would leave lights on even when I was no longer using them. If it weren’t for this self-reflection period, I most likely would have never paid too much attention to this. Although the action doesn’t seem negative, it is doing this. It wastes energy and increases my carbon footprint and my family’s electric bill. I’m not the only person who does this.
Although constantly turning off and unplugging all my electronics can seem time-consuming, it can significantly impact my carbon footprint and can even cut down my electricity bill. Such a small task can make such a big impact on our lives right now and in the future. Emphasizing these habits will encourage sustainability and increase self-reliance on energy use, leading to a greener way of living. Small adjustments like this are what will help reduce greenhouse gases, making a more beautiful and healthy future for us all.
