Use your knowledge of African American literature to write an in-depth essay that evaluates a work of your choice. You can choose any work; however, keep in mind that shorter works may be more difficult to sustain an 8-10 page discussion.
Your essay should answer at least four (4) of the following questions:
What makes the work stand out among other works created during the same period?
What makes the work significant in the body of work of its author?
What are the major themes in the work?
How does the work address historical and contemporary issues related to African American life and culture?
What do detractors of the work say about its merit as a work of art? For example, are characters in the work considered stereotypical? What is your response to the work’s detractors?
Comment on the work’s multiple formats, for example, print, audio, film, visual depictions, children’s literature.
What aspects of the work have allowed it to remain significant over a significant period of time?
In addition, you may also want to bring attention to the following themes: gender, enslavement, religion, racism, freedom, realism, modernism, etc.
Consider commenting on the following: structure, historical accuracy, language, plot, character, etc.
Length: 8-10 double-spaced pages, not including a list of works cited.
