This benchmark (major) assignment requires students to critically assess and reflect on
what was learned based on the NASW Code of Ethics specifically related to social
workers’ use of technology in practice. Students are asked to explore their new
knowledge and provide feedback based on items 1, 2, & 3 below. Be as specific as
possible in writing this Reflection and provide examples where appropriate. Complete
this assignment by writing in first-person (such as using the word ‘I’), rather than second
(you/your) or third person (he/she/they).
1. Some Social Workers use social media, texting, and other virtual tools to engage
clients. What do you believe are appropriate boundaries in the professional relationship?
For example, should Social Workers “friend” or “follow” their clients on social media,
discuss if there are ever appropriate situations Social Workers should engage in Dual
Relationships with their clients? Draw on the 2020-21 NASW Code of Ethics and the
Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice to help you formulate your response.
