Write an essay (maximum 4,000 words) answering any ONE of the four questions below. Note that each of the questions is multi-part and you should answer all parts of your chosen question.
Question 1
The police can be held accountable for a range of actions they may perform within their daily work roles. Complete both tasks below:
a) What roles do a) the Police and Crime Commissioner, b) the Independent Police Complaints Commission, and c) the Parliament in England, play in police accountability?
b) How well does the current system of police accountability ensure that the police act in a professional manner whilst also serving the needs of the public?

Through forms of ‘responsibilisation’, both the police and the public have been expected to work together to reduce crime. Complete all three tasks below:
a) Describe community policing and how the police are expected to work with the public in such a model of policing.
b) How are members of the public involved in a community-based model of policing?
c) Critically discuss the limitations of the community policing model and the difficulties in implementing such a model.

Police work has increasingly ‘pluralised’ in recent years with other governmental and private bodies now playing some role in ‘police work’. Complete both tasks below:
a) To what extent do private companies perform ‘police work’ and in which areas of policing is this most likely to be observed?
b) How effective is the contracting of private companies in reducing crime?

The Public Order Act 1986 has played a major role in the policing of groups of people. Complete all three tasks below:
a) How has the use of public order policing influenced the ways in which groups of people are ‘policed’?

c) What measures could be put in place to reduce the likelihood of riots manifesting?

The feedback is designed to help you develop areas of your work and it helps you develop your skills as an independent learner.
If you are a distance learning student, you should submit your work, by email, to your tutor, no later than 2 weeks before the actual submission deadline. If you are a blended learning student, your tutor will give you a deadline for formative feedback and further details.
Formative feedback will not be given to work submitted after the above date or the date specified by your tutor – if a blended learning student.

Submission Guidance
Assignments submitted late will not be accepted and will be marked as a 0% fail.
Your assessment can be submitted as a single Word (MS Word) or PDF file, or, as multiple files.
If you chose to submit multiple files, you must name each document as the question/part you are answering along with your student number ie Q1 Section A STUXXXX. If you wish to overwrite your submission or one of your submissions, you must ensure that your new submission is named exactly the same as the previous in order for the system to overwrite it.
