Part 1. Identify and develop a historical analysis of a particular institution. This paper should include the social, economic, and political context of its founding, the mission and purpose of the institution, its intended student population, faculty, and curriculum. Who were their competitors at that time? How does the history of this institution complement, contradict, and/or nuance our historical understanding of higher education?
Part 2. Examine the contemporary context of the same institution, describing the current landscape of the institution. Were there any significant historical events that have had an influence on how the institution currently exists? How has the student body, faculty, or curriculum changed? What has remained consistent? What are the most important issues facing this institution today? Who are the competitors/benchmark institutions?
Students must use at least two primary sources from the college or university website or archive, as well as incorporate our class readings. Also you must interview a current employee or student. If you have trouble considering a person to interview, please ask for help and we will provide assistance. Often someone like the past to the president/chief of staff or the assistant to the provost is a good place to start.
The paper should follow all APA guidelines and must be between 10-15 pages, excluding cover page and references. The presentation should be a 5-7 minute overview of the paper. This can be a narrated or screencast using Powerpoint or Prezi. Feel free to get creative in your presentation style.
