One of the most critical questions facing American education today is how to make schools safer. Parents, teachers, and administrators are concerned about bullying, sexual harassment, mass shootings in schools, and whether zero-tolerance school discipline policies create a risk of perpetuating a “school-to-prison pipeline”. Choose at least one of these three and post a thoughtful response, using a subject line that identifies the topic you chose. If you want to address more than one topic you are welcome to do that. If you have experience with the topic as a student, educator, or parent, feel free to add that. References to course material would add to your posting but are not required. Respond to two classmates with questions or comments about their postings – though your grade for this will be based on what you write about the topic that you select.
Topic 1
What do you think could and should be done to keep students safe from lethal acts of violence? Would you advocate hiring more mental health specialists, more school safety police officers, “hardening buildings” to make it more difficult for shooters to break into buildings and classrooms, equipping students with bulletproof jackets and backpacks, and training students to fight back? What are the benefits and limits of these approaches?
Topic 2
Are schools and administrators responsible for protecting students from bullying and harassment by their peers when it happens on campus? How about cyber bullying? Students who are different- experiencing disabilities, members of religious, racial, or ethnic groups who are minorities within schools, gay or transgender can be especially vulnerable. What kinds of programs and approaches seem most helpful for protecting vulnerable students? Will “anti-woke” *policies aimed at banning recognition of transgender students or discussion about sexual orientation, gender and patterns of racism in the US prevent educators from responding when they learn of students being bullied because of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, or ethnicity?
Topic 3
Do “zero tolerance” policies lead to a “School to Prison” pipeline? How should school administrators weigh the need to maintain a safe environment that supports learning against the damage of overreacting to disruptive behavior?
