Assignment II.

Complete one of these:

A. Self-Reflection  or  B. Brief Case

(see directions below for submission requirements)

A.  Self-Reflection

Think about the components of the biopsychosocial framework outlined in this module and your text.  This assignment requires you to apply some aspects of this framework and an additional assessment tool (explained below) to yourself.  This exercise will help you understand how to use the template for our case studies throughout the semester.  Additional research is not required for this exercise.

Imagine one day needing to seek out a clinician regarding an issue of concern that may impact your functioning.  What issues addressed in the framework would be most important for the clinician to know from your perspective?  This assignment is for the purpose of self-reflection only!  Share only what you are comfortable with.

Mental Health Instrument / Tool

Look online to find a mental health tool that helps assess one’s functioning.  Complete the tool for the purpose of this exercise.  Describe the instrument you utilized (purpose, number of items, general type of information).  Report on how accurately you think the instrument depicted your mental health functioning across the various domains (did it assess these areas poorly or did it do well)?  (write your response to this on a separate sheet, 50-70 words – attach it to the Template report below)

Case Template

You will now use some sections from the Case Template form and complete it as described here.  Consider how these may apply if you ever needed to speak with a clinician or other helping professional in the future.  Additional research is not required for this exercise.

a)  Part II – Biopsychosocial Risk and Resilience Assessment

What would you want to be known about any risk factors you may face?  What are some primary areas of resilience or strengths that apply to you across biological, psychological and social domains?  (list these in the appropriate column) b)  Part III – Other Issues (Cultural Influence)

Next, respond to the questions as specified regarding any cultural influences which may impact how you deal with problems.

Specify what you would want the clinician to know about yourself across the various components of the framework (for example in terms of gender, race, culture, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, age etc).  Which of these aspects of ‘self’ are most important in order for a clinician to fully understand who you are?  (70 -100 words)

c)  Framework

Overall, what are some benefits/advantages you see in the use of this biopsychosocial framework?  Do you see any negative aspects in the use of this framework? (50 – 70 words)

If you are concerned about any serious findings as a result of completing this exercise, please seek out support services/assistance as necessary

Or

B.  Brief Case Assessment

Write up an analysis of some key factors presented in the Henry Williams case presented in Chapter 1 (from Corcoran & Walsh text).  This will give you the opportunity to practice the assessment process using the Case Templates which will be completed throughout the semester. Additional research is not required for this exercise. Case Template

You will complete some sections of the Case Template form as described here (submit this assignment using the template)

a)  Part II – Biopsychosocial Risk and Resilience Assessment

Identify and list any risk factors evident for the Williams case? Now list some of the primary areas of resilience or strengths that apply to him across biological, psychological and social domains.

b)  Part III – Other Issues

Cultural Influence  – Respond to the questions as specified regarding any cultural influences which may impact how Mr. Williams deals with problems (consider issues related to gender, race, culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age etc).  70 -100 words

Trauma  –  Describe how trauma may impact the diagnosis or treatment of this individual.  (70 -100 words) c)  Framework
