WEEK 3

ASSIGNMENT- REGULATORY CASE STUDY

PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT

Information and communication technology would not work if it were not for industry standards and regulations. Standards and regulations also need to evolve. In this assignment, you have the opportunity to propose what you think the direction standards and regulations should take. The assignment should demonstrate your understanding of the current regulatory environment and the role they play in the ICT industry. Using that understanding as a foundation, you can then demonstrate your ability to forecast future standards and regulatory frameworks. The assignment also develops your research and writing skills.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Pick one of the following standards and regulatory case studies for your research:

  1. NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, develops cybersecurity standards, guidelines, and best practices. Those standards cover several topics, including trustworthy platforms and networks, privacy engineering, identity and access management, and risk management. Pick one of the cybersecurity NIST topicsLinks to an external site. and develop an approach for any organization that wishes to improve its cybersecurity processes.
  2. The Internet of Things (IoT) is expanding rapidly. How might those who manufacture and sell IoT products use ISO standards to ensure those products work efficiently and securely? If companies follow those standards, should their customers feel their product will work well in their homes or business? Will those devices be secure?
  3. Net neutrality is a uniquely American issue. The FCC’s approach to net neutrality changes every time there’s a different political party. What can we learn from other countries to resolve this debate? What benefits might consumers experience with a different approach to internet access and its regulation?
  4. The FCC 2020 Deployment Report identified 18 million Americans without access to broadband, mainly in rural areas. The FCC defines broadband as speeds of 25 Mbps. Many feel the FCC undercounts the number of Americans without broadband access due to inaccurate maps. Furthermore, the definition of broadband sets the speed requirement too low. Provide a critique of the current state of internet access and provide alternative regulations the FCC and other government entities should consider to improve internet access.
  5. The flow of digital information transcends borders. Some of that information is private, and those who own that information do not want to have that information shared with others without permission. The EU, California, and India have taken some steps to establish privacy laws to protect their citizens. Is it enough? Should there be global privacy regulation? If so, who should enforce those regulations? Provide a critique of the current state of privacy and develop a path forward for improvement.
  6. Big Tech, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, Meta (Facebook), and Microsoft is getting bigger. Should the FTC take antitrust action against any one of these companies? Pick one of the big tech companies and describe the problem their size and market power have caused. Propose and justify the action the FCC, with possible participation by the Justice Department, should take.

You may develop a case study topic of your own. Please contact your instructor in advance to gain their approval.
