Contacting your representative is one way to engage in politics. For this reaction paper, you will demonstrate that you know how to reach out to one of your representatives about an issue that is important to you. You are not required to actually reach out- just submit the script you would use if you were to contact your representative.
First, explain which issue you are concerned about and why. Make sure that you fully outline your position and why you feel this way. Secondly, explain to who you are going to direct your concern and why you selected that representative. Include the contact information for your elected representative. Third, include the script you used for your contact. Finally, contact your representative and report back on your experience. How did you contact them? Why did you select this method? What response do you expect?
As a reminder, reaction papers are designed for you to have a space to think through complex historical and governmental issues. The overarching goal is that these assignments provide you with early opportunities to think about the themes that will inform your own view of government and politics. Please don’t spend any time worrying about my particular views on the issues. Your response should be at least 300 words and contain your analysis, reactions, or connections that you find compelling. For full credit, your paper must not simply sum up the reading or repeat points made there. Rather, I’m looking for you to create your own interpretation or discuss some original insight. Include citations as needed.
