In February 2021, a coup d’état was initiated in Burma. It never occurred to me that I would ever have to witness a military coup. Due to the pandemic, after I applied to college, I started my first semester virtually on Zoom despite the time difference. Since the coup happened, I was just starting my first online semester in Burma, but not even a week into the semester, all the carrier services and wifi got cut off.
From there, it became harder for me to continue my classes online. However, I did not give up on the progress that I had with college so I tried my best to make up for my classes despite the internet cut-off periods. But I took the necessary online resources off and saw how things would turn out in my country.
It also requires plenty of money to study abroad because of the inflation from the coup. With the country coming to a sudden halt on everything, I started worrying about the financial situation of my family because I have one elder brother and one younger sister. We had to decide between continuing my pursuit of a college education and burdening my parents with my tuition fees, especially with the inflation from the coup. Thanks to my parents, who have always been supportive of all of our siblings, me and my brother became first-generation college students and my sister got into an elementary school in our neighborhood.
Despite my country going through a civil war, I persisted due to my resolve to get higher education and by trying to get a better outcome in all those bad situations that we had gone through. Finally, I am in the United States in person, planning to transfer to a four-year institution and still continue my academic journey.
