Speech #3 (Persuasive)
For this speech, you will try to convince your audience that something is either true or false, that something should be judged a certain way (good/bad, fair/unfair, just/unjust, etc.) and/or that we should be taking specific action on any given issue. In the speech communication discipline, we call these speeches to convince (true/false and judgment) and speeches to actuate (taking action). Often in our actual arguments with any given audience, these blend together, so that we prove something or convince people they should view something a certain way, and then tell them what to do about the issue.
Specifically, I want you to think about how you might organize your message so that it’s the most effective in convincing an audience to come to your way of thinking/doing. For example, you might use what we call a problem-cause-solution, a problem-solution, or comparative advantages speech. So, if you choose problem-cause-solution, for example, you tell us about a problem (the “bad stuff”) related to an issue, the cause (why the “bad stuff” is happening) of the problem, and the solution (how to fix the “bad stuff”) to the problem. Each of these areas will be a main point, so you will have 3 main points total. Should you choose problem-solution, while you may have some of the cause within the problem point, it’s not a separate main point. With comparative advantages, your main goal is to list all the ways doing what you want us to do will improve our lives. A comparative advantages format shows why your solution to a problem is better than all other proposed solutions
You must cite at least 3 separate sources both within the speech itself and in the outline on a reference page (in APA or MLA style, and the sources should be cited throughout the speech, and in the formal citation style at the end of your outline as shown in the examples). Your sources should be credible, but they do not have to come from the academic indexes you can access through our library. They are a great place to begin, but they are certainly not the only credible (believable) sources out there. You are welcome to use an online citing tool to create your works cited/reference page.
