Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for students to apply sociological knowledge regarding the body to things you observe in your everyday life
Skills: Apply sociological knowledge; collect and analyze data; organize information; relate sociological knowledge to everyday experiences.
Task: In this class, you will write a 1200-1500 word paper (approx.. 4-6 pages) applying concepts from class. You will have a choice from the following two options. For each option, you will draw on at least two sources from class in order to write your paper. Any sources you use should be referenced using ASA or APA style.
Media analysis
For this option, you will find a piece of media (a film, television show, song, music video, news article, opinion piece, social media post, video game, advertisement) that illustrates some of the concepts we have discussed in class, and explain how one of the major theorists we discussed this semester (i.e. Elias, Goffman, Foucault, Bartky, Bourdieu, Featherstone, Gilman, Conrad) would explain what is happening in this media. Use the following structure for your paper.
Embed the media that you will be discussing in this assignment, or provide a link to it.
Introduce the theorist and concepts you will be using, and how they relate to the sociology of the body (1-2 paragraphs)
Briefly summarize the piece of media you have chosen (1-3 paragraphs)
Describe the theory/concepts that you are applying to this media in depth (3-5 paragraphs)
Explain how your theorist would interpret this media, or how this media exemplifies the theory you are discussing. (2-5 paragraphs)
Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs)
