Write a 1100-1200-word essay that compares and contrasts
the Malcolm X piece (learning to read) with the Douglass piece (learning to read and write). Be sure that your paper
focuses primarily on the ideas contained in the essays or the rhetorical
structure of the essays. Consider in your introduction, as supporting
evidence, or in your conclusion, the lives of the authors or the
circumstances under which each work was written. These leaders’
biographical and cultural backgrounds helped form their philosophies
and approaches. Consider how the two authors’ ideas remain central in
contemporary society.
Make sure that you have a specific, significant thesis. Concentrate
especially on the organization of your essay (Block or Point-by-Point
organization—see lecture on this on BlackBoard). You are expected to
use appropriate supporting quotes and document them using
parenthetical citations in the text.
