Throughout this course there are two main goals I wish to achieve. The first is to learn the basic knowledge for the differences between administration and prescribing. Since there is usually considered a difference between the administration process and the prescribing process, I hope this class helps me bridge the divide. (Robinson & Woo, 2019). Furthermore, I would hope this class helps teach why there are differences in comparison to our previous education. By doing this I hope to help bridge the knowledge gap that is created by what we were likely previously taught.
The second goal is to hopefully gain some diagnostic reasoning for medication usage. While knowing essentials for which medication is used in each situation, I would hope to start to gain a critical understanding and the nuances of potential situational differences. Many new nurse practitioners report difficulties with this when first starting out (Smith et al., 2022).
Pharmacology is likely one of the cornerstones of nurse practitioner medical practice. If one wants to succeed in the practice, they likely must have a good understanding of when to use certain medications. Also, by understanding pharmacology they, the nurse practitioner, can better collaborate and work with other professionals. One of these specific professionals is the pharmacologists themselves. Programs that specifically emphasize pharmacology have been shown to have better interprofessional collaboration (Dilles et al., 2021).
