The first half of the course has given you a sense of the context, institutions, and operations of the Canadian federal cultural policy environment. This assignment asks you to think critically about the role of cultural policy in the environment in which you live and to look further into its impact and significance in your life.
Keeping in mind key course themes, you will write a critical response paper exploring a current issue or development in cultural policy based on at least three news reports, blog postings, podcasts, broadcasts, or other sources in the past one or two years.
Introduce your topic with a brief reference to two course readings (any unit or units). This should include one policy document (or recommended reading) that you find relevant to your chosen topic: be sure to explain why it is relevant. For the main part of the paper, discuss your topic with reference to at least three sources, and comment on its broader significance in the field of Canadian cultural policy. Cite all sources.
Consider these questions as a guide:
Why do you find this particular issue of interest and why is it important to you?
In your opinion, does it challenge traditional policy mandates or goals?
Does it indicate a shift in public support for culture?
Does it attempt to meet new technological challenges?
Do current events demonstrate that the policy has been effective, needs to change, or is in the process of changing?
Are there glaring omissions from related policy that have left certain groups or cultural forms inadequately supported?
What do you foresee, or what would you recommend in terms of policy development around this issue?
