The Rod of Justice

Gender is a major component of the relationships in “The Rod of Justice.” Write a literary paper that examines how the genders relate to power in the story.

STEP FOUR: One of the best ways to approach this literary analysis would be to develop a thesis statement that contains the following components: 1) the name of the literary piece, 2) the name of the author, and 3) the point to be made. For example:

In “The Man Who was Almost a Man” by Richard Wright, the gun was a representation of respect and independence that the protagonist was unwilling to openly embrace in a mature way.

STEP FIVE: Find evidence in the story to substantiate your position. Take your audience into consideration as you begin developing the literary paper. Open the literary analysis by providing any important background information—historical background information, background information on the period, definitions, etc. You should clearly identify each of your reasons, ideally at the beginning of each section. Be sure to clearly explain each reason and use excerpts from the poem to support your points. Remember, when quoting poetry, you cite line numbers.  (Use the historical present tense!!) End your literary analysis by summarizing the points that were made in the analysis itself.
